Six Pack Abs???

Question:
What is the best way to achieve the “six-pack” look in my abdominal region – cardio or strength training?

Answer: This is an excellent question and you have already stated 2/3 of the answer. Both cardiovascular fitness and strength training will get you those washboard abs that most people work so hard in the gym for. The problem is that a heavy emphasis on proper nutrition seems to be the missing link. You can work out as hard as your abs will allow, but if you do not follow a clean, balanced and basic eating plan you are setting yourself up for failure. First, the cardio is important for burning fat – total body fat. As most of you know, the idea of spot – reducing is a myth. You cannot expect to lose fat only in the abdominal region after an intense bout on the treadmill. This is good news, however, since most people want to burn fat everywhere. Be consistent with the cardio (ie: 4 – 5 times per week) and you will be well on your way to a sleek, sexy physique. Second, the strength training is just as important as the cardio. You must add resistance in order to tone and define the abdominal muscles just like any other body part. Four types of muscle make up the abdominal region: rectus abdominis, external obliques, internal obliques and tranverse abdominis. Aim to perform exercises that target all of these regions for optimal sculpting. Finally, and possibly most important, eat clean…..no I did not say diet. Follow a balanced eating plan catered to your individual needs. Fat-burning foods that contain the basic and essential nutrients are your key to success……not a pill! Taking all of this together, research has shown that most men can achieve the “six – pack” look when their body fat reaches 9 – 10% and for women, 17 – 18 %. Consistent cardio, strength training and proper nutrition will get you where you want to be.
